Eaton Canyon Falls

Waterfall

To experience a different aspect of Eaton Canyon, hike to the base of the 50-foot Eaton Canyon Waterfall, located just north of Eaton Canyon Natural Area in the Angeles National Forest.  You can get there either by parking in the Nature Center parking lot, crossing the wash, and continuing 1.5 miles up a slight incline, or by parking at the Pinecrest gate and hiking 0.4 miles north from the bridge.  To get to the Pinecrest gate, go north on Altadena Drive one mile past the entrance to Eaton Canyon.  Turn right on Crescent, then right again on Pinecrest.  Observe parking signs carefully.

There is water at the falls year-round, but in dry seasons and during the summer months the stream bed may be partially or totally dry.  In order to reach the falls you'll have to cross the stream bed several times, but only in the wettest months will this be particularly difficult.

The hike is suitable for most individuals, including children; however, good hiking shoes are recommended because it is necessary to cross the streambed and rocks that may be wet and slippery.

WATERFALL WARNING!

Hiking to and above the first waterfall is not recommended. You should be aware that by trying to climb to the top of the waterfall, you are literally putting your life at risk. Many hikers attempting to climb above the falls and reach the upper “razorback trail” have been seriously injured, and fatalities occur all too frequently.

On average, hikers are rescued weekly from this area.  Remember that this is a rugged natural area.  Services and aid are not readily available, and there is no trail leading up to the top of the waterfall.
